The Toa Reinsurance Company of America began business in 1982 as a separately capitalized company in the United States. As a result of a long-standing strategic alliance between The Toa Reinsurance Company, Ltd. (Tokyo) and The Mercantile & General Reinsurance Co., Toa Re America and M&G Re America shared offices, staffing and business during their successful 15 year relationship in the U.S.
In 1996, the Mercantile & General Group was sold to Swiss Re, and Swiss Re in turn sold Mercantile & General of America to The Toa Reinsurance Company., Ltd. Toa Re America and the former M&G America were merged, and now operate as Toa Re of America a Delaware Insurance Corporation. The acquisition of a long-time partner gave Toa Reinsurance Company., Ltd. the strategic advantage of expanding its scope of business in the United States without experiencing the cultural barriers or miscommunications often associated with international transactions.
The Toa Reinsurance Company., Ltd. (Toa Tokyo) , the parent organization of Toa Re America was established in 1940 and re-established after World War II in 1947.
